The first & last time I played an 8 string bass (octave setup) I'd skipped school to go try out basses in Gamlins music Cardiff.

I've always fancied having one but found them all a bit too spikey & quite a few quid. Until I saw this "affordable version" from Warwick.

Firstly it played really well out of the box after a tune. I got instantly confused with the tuning machines but I've got a system now!

Here are the specs from Warwick

  • Body: Alder

  • Neck: Maple

  • Neck attachment: Bolt-on

  • Fretboard: Wenge

  • Frets: 24 Extra jumbo nickel silver

  • Scale: Long scale

  • Pickups: 2 Active MEC J/J

  • Active 2-way electronics

  • Controls: Volume, Balance, Treble, Bass

  • Machine heads: Warwick

  • Nut: Warwick Just-A-Nut III

  • Warwick security locks

  • Bridge: 2-Piece Warwick

  • Hardware: Chrome

  • Strings: Warwick Red

  • Colour: Nirvana Black Transparent Satin

  • Includes a gig bag

Two pickups of the Jazz style a volume, pickup blend & bass/treble boost & cut.

Made in china and my first Warwick adventure I have to say it is put together well & comfortable to play.

I'll update this with more details & happenings as I find something to play it on haha!

Phill.

That's a fantastic memory, skipping school to try out an 8-string bass at Gamlins – especially with that octave setup! The sonic possibilities an 8-string opens up are incredible, truly a different beast than a standard four-string, adding so much depth and jangle. Getting those unique voicings to sit perfectly, however, often comes down to precise intonation and keeping all those strings in tune. For anyone looking for a reliable way to ensure their bass, no matter how many strings, is perfectly pitched, having a solid online bass tuner is essential.
